Sincona sale 77, lot 4051
Sincona Auction 105, lot 3109. This example shows signs of an undertype.

The first specimen was lot 4051 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton. Halbbatzen 1826, Basel. Probe. Ovales Wappen über Wertangabe. Kein Strich dazwischen. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, half batzen of 1826, Basel mint. Obverse: oval arms over the value with no bar between. Rare, Good very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 3109 in Sincona Auction 105 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$1,143 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Halbbatzen 1826, Basel. Probe. Variante mit ovalem Wappen ohne Leiste. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, pattern half batzen of 1826, Basel mint. Obverse: oval arms without bar. Rare, Good Very Fine.)"

The canton of Basel issued three different five rappen in 1826; KM 204 is common; the other two (KM 205 and KM 206) are rare. KM 205, shown here, has rosettes instead of fleurs-de-lys on the reverse. Ten rappen made a batzen and forty batzen made a thaler. This is the last year Basel issued coins.
