Sincona sale 102, lot 5074

This specimen was lot 5074 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$452 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Bistum Basel Johann Konrad II. von Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-1737. Schilling 1723, Pruntrut. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. (Switzerland, bishopric of Basel, John Conrad II of Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-37, schilling of 1723, Pruntrut mint. Rare in this condition, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Minor flan flaw.)"

The bishops of Basel were expelled from the town during the Reformation. He resided in Pruntrut and normally issued coins from there. This type was struck 1716-19, 1722-24, 1727. We're not sure of the face value of this coin; in Zürich, one thaler was 72 schilling.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.18-1.34 g, billon, 21 mm diameter, this specimen 1.30 g.
