Basel 1535 batzen

Sincona sale 80, lot 5022

This specimen was lot 5022 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$659 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton, Batzen 1535, Basel. Baslerstab eingefasst von der Jahreszahl 15 - 35 [obverse: city badge divides the date]. Very rare. About very fine." In the nineteenth century, forty batzen made a thaler. Later batzen in our Wiki, such as this one from 1765, weighed about 2 g but we don't know what purity silver was used.
