Künker sale 352, lot 1743

This specimen was lot 1743 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,845 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAMBERG, BISTUM, Johann Philipp Anton von Frankenstein, 1746-1753. Dukat 1746, Nürnberg, auf die Huldigung der Stadt Bamberg. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Leicht gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich, Die Umschrift der Vorder- und Rückseite enthält das Chronogramm der Jahreszahl 1746. (Germany, bishopric of Bamberg, Johann Philipp Anton von Frankenstein, 1746-53, ducat of 1746, Nuremberg mint, on the homage of the city of Bamberg. Very rare, slightly wavy, very fine to extremely fine, date in chronogram.)"

Of the seven bishops who ruled Bamberg in the eighteenth century, three were also bishops of neighboring Wurzburg. While this was the case, no coins were issued for Bamberg. This ducat is rare.
