Sincona sale 38, lot 1049

This specimen was lot 1049 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,020 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Elizabeth II. 1952- 50 Dollars 1971. Santa Maria. Polierte Platte. FDC. (Bahamas, Elizabeth II, 1952-, fifty dollars of 1971, on the Santa Maria, Choice Proof.)"

This NCLT celebrates Colombus's flagship, the Santa Maria. The appearance depicted is strictly conjectural as no contemporary documentation exists of the ship.

Recorded mintage: 6,800 plus 1,250 proofs plus KM 29 (mintage 700) struck in Italy with hallmark.

Specification: 19.97 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 19.87 g.
