Sincona sale 97, lot 1414

This specimen was lot 1414 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,596 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Baden, Grossherzogtum, Friedrich II. 1907-1918. 10 Mark 1912 G, Karlsruhe. Seltener Jahrgang. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Frederick II, 1907-18, ten mark of 1912, Karlsruhe mint. Rare date. NGC MS64, Finest certified by NGC.)"

Altho Baden was not a major issuer of coins prior to unification, its issues during the Empire (1871-1918) were substantial. The Baden mint at Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") struck minor coins during the Empire and afterward until today. This type was struck 1909-13 for the grand duke of Baden but is rather scarcer than the contemporary twenty mark (KM 284).

Recorded mintage: 25,975, a scarce date.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 282, J. 191. Fr-3761.
