This specimen was lot 1806 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $333.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "BADEN-DURLACH: Karl Friedrich, 1738-1811, AR 60 kreuzer, 1740, initial H, lightly cleaned, one-year type, Choice EF, S." We wish the auctioneers had reported the weight of this specimen as this is the period when the gulden, or sixty kreuzer, sank from two-thirds of a thaler down to half a thaler. We believe this coin is the latter. At this time, Baden, in the southwest of Germany, was a minor state subject to frequent French invasions and issued little coinage.
Recorded mintage: 6,432.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM-86, Schön-28.
