Baden 1738-H ducat Fr-136
This specimen was lot 1005 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$10,571 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Baden-Durlach, Markgrafschaft, Karl Friedrich, unter Vormundschaft der Gräfin Magdalena Wilhelmina und des Grafen Karl August, 1738-1745. Dukat 1738, Durlach. Auf seine Huldigung in Baden-Hachberg. Münzmeister Johann Jakob Handmann. Sehr selten. Nur 380 Exemplare geprägt. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Germany, margraviate of Baden-Durlach, Charles Frederick, under the regency of countess Magdalena Wilhelmina and count Charles August, 1738-45, ducat of 1738, Durlach mint, for the homage of Baden-Hachberg. Very rare. Only 380 pieces struck, About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"
Baden was split into Baden-Baden (Catholic) and Baden-Durlach (Lutheran) in 1535 on the death of Christopher I. The Baden-Baden line fell extinct in 1771 and merged back into Baden-Durlach. This and several other "homage ducats" are listed in the Unusual World Coins.
