This specimen was lot 20067 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I of Portugal III (3) Reis 1750, MS63 BN NGC, a spectacular example of this elusive type with glossy brown surfaces and traces of luster in the legends. The strike is crisp and most attractive. A joy to behold!" The Azores, an island group in the Atlantic, long survived on foreign coins brought thither by traders but occasionally Portuguese authorities issued coins for the colonies. This rare issue lacks a photo in the SCWC.
