Awadh AH 1271 1/4 ashrafi Fr-1025
The first specimen was lot 21070 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Awadh. 1/4 Ashrafi, AH 1271 (1854/5). Lucknow Mint. NGC MS-64. RARE denomination. Sharply struck with clear definition of the legends. Lustrous and attractive displaying light tone. Ex: Lawrence Adams Collection." The second specimen was lot 1766 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[2] noted, "India: Awadh. ¼ Ashrafi (Mohur), AH1271 (1855). Luknow mint. Wajid Ali Shah, 1847-1856. NGC graded MS-64." This type is not listed as expensive in the SCWC. The known dates include AH 1267, 1268 and 1271. The Lucknow mint also issued gold coins in the denominations of 1/16, 1/8, half and one ashrafi.
