Awadh AH 1268(5) ashrafi Fr-1023
This specimen was lot 926 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "AWADH: Wajid Ali Shah, 1847-1856, AV ashrafi, Lakhnau, AH1268 year 5, a lustrous example, PCGS graded AU55." This product of the Lucknow mint is listed for AH 1263 thru AH 1278. Friedberg lists this coin as a mohur, the gold version of the rupee. Wikipedia comments, "Mirza Wajid Ali Shah (Urdu: واجد علی شاه) (1822-87) was the eleventh and last King of Awadh, holding the position for 9 years, from 13 February 1847 to 11 February 1856." He was deposed and his domain annexed by the East India Company. Resentment of this and other acts led to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, which was centered at Awadh's capital Lucknow.
