Austrian Netherlands 1766(a) escalin
This specimen was lot 1128 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €150 (about US$209 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR escalin, 1766, Bruxelles. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Écu couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Traces d'ajustage. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver escalin of 1766, Brussels mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and bearing the arms of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Light adjustment marks, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1751-54 and 1763-68 at Antwerp, Bruges and Brussels. The Brussels mintmark is an angel face, visible at the bottom of the obverse. A double escalin (KM 16) exists.
Recorded mintage: 157,092, a better date.
