Austrian Netherlands 1767(a) escalin
This specimen was lot 1116 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €200 (about US$250 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR escalin, 1767, Bruxelles. D/ Lion deb. à g., brandissant une épée et ten. l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver escalin of 1767, Brussels mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and bearing the arms of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. about Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1751-54 and 1763-68 at Antwerp, Bruges and Brussels. The Brussels mintmark is an angel face, visible at the bottom of the obverse. This is a common date; a double escalin (KM 16) exists.
