Austrian Netherlands 1766(a) kronenthaler Dav-1282
The first specimen was lot 23389 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Kronentaler, 1766/5. Brussels Mint. Maria Theresia. NGC AU-50. A wholesome lightly circulated coin with even wear and generally sharp strike. It exhibits a medium gray, even tone and a minimum of noticeable marks. From the Habsburg Collection." The second specimen was lot 1994 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$145 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Kronentaler 1766, Brüssel. Sehr schön. Leicht bearbeitet. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, crown thaler of 1766, Brussels mint. Very Fine, lightly tooled.)"
This type was struck in 1755-79 during the reign of Maria Theresia (Dav-1282, shown here) and Francis I (Dav-1283). It replaced the ducaton in 1755 but retained many stylistic features. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.
