The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Austria, 1948-94. This date is common. Austria began minting euros in 2002, rendering this coin obsolete. The old Hapsburg eagle clasped an orb and scepter, symbols of imperial power; the republican eagle holds a hammer and sickle, symbols of the hard work needed to rebuild from the disaster of World War Two. In 1982, US$1 = 16.7 schilling.
Recorded mintage: 3,950,000 + 50,000 proofs.
Specification: 2.5 g, zinc, 19 mm diameter.
