Austria 1958 25 schilling
This specimen was lot 33333 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Republic Proof 'Auer von Welsbach' 25 Schilling 1958 PR66 Cameo NGC. A lovely Proof struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of chemist Auer von Welsbach." This denomination was used for NCLT's only. Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) was an Austrian scientist and inventor, who separated the ore didymium into the elements neodymium and praseodymium in 1885. He was also one of three scientists to independently discover the element lutetium, separating it from ytterbium in 1907. He also improved the gas mantle used in kerosene lamps and the filaments used in light bulbs.
