Sincona sale 101, lot 3421

This specimen was lot 3421 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$9,043 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. 100 Kronen 1910, Wien. Selten. Nur 3'074 Exemplare geprägt. Kleine Kratzer. (empire of Austria-Hungary, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, one hundred coronas of 1910, Vienna mint. Rare. Only 3,074 specimens struck. NGC PL58, Small scratches.)"

This gold coin is among the last issued before Austria's suicidal plunge into World War One. The portrait is of Francis Joseph, emperor of Austria 1848-1916. The Austro-Hungarian empire did not long survive him. Regular 100 coronas were emitted 1909-15, with the 1915 being restruck in large numbers in recent times.
