Austria 1886 2 florins Dav-27
This specimen was lot 2707 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$191 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Doppelgulden 1886. Wien. Vorzüglich-FDC. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, double gulden of 1886, Vienna mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"
When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This type of double florin was struck 1872-92. This date is common, despite the small mintage, suggesting that it was extensively saved.
Recorded mintage: 92,988.
Specification: 24.69 g, 0.900 fine silver, 36 mm diameter, this specimen 24.71 g.
