Austria 1881 2 florins Dav-27
This specimen was lot 2965 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,335 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. 2 Gulden 1881, Wien. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, double gulden of 1881, Vienna mint. Uncirculated, Cabinet piece.)"
When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This type of double florin was struck 1872-92. This date is common, despite the small mintage, suggesting that it was extensively saved.
Recorded mintage: 104,004.
Specification: 24.69 g, 0.900 fine silver.
