Austria 1880 2 florins Dav-27
This specimen was lot 42287 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 2 Florin, 1880. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. Moderately toned with a few small marks in the fields and a tiny edge knock at five o'clock on the reverse that limit the grade." When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This type of double florin was struck 1872-92. This date is common, despite the small mintage, suggesting that it was extensively saved.
