Sincona sale 85, lot 2974

This specimen was lot 2974 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$606 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1881, Wien. NGC UNC Details. Revers berieben. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1881, Vienna mint. Reverse polished.)"

Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types. This design was struck 1872-1915 without mintmark and is common. The 1915 has been restruck and is readily available for its bullion value.

Recorded mintage: 477,000.
