Künker sale 406, lot 3892

This specimen was lot 3892 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €525 (about US$689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1872, Wien. 3,44 g Feingold. GOLD. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Aurea Numismatika 61, Prag 2015, Nr. 111. (empire of Austria-Hungary, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1872, Vienna mint. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

In 1872, the bust was modified to show an older and balder portrait of the emperor, which is what we show here. The mintmark was also deleted. The ducat was struck in this style until 1915 and is very common.

Recorded mintage: 460,000.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 2267, Fr-493; J. 344; Schl. 536.
