This specimen was lot 33384 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria. Franz Joseph I Taler 1855-A MS65 NGC, Vienna mint. An absolute Gem shimmering glassy elements in the peripheries and hints of lapis lazuli in the steely-golden fields. Topped by a single MS65+ in NGC's census." This type was struck at Vienna (shown here) and Kremnitz (mintmark "B") in 1853-56. It is the last full weight thaler. Subsequent thalers were struck to the vereinsthaler standard (18.52 g, 0.900 fine). After 1867, Bismarck forced Austria out of German affairs and the Hapsburgs thereafter had little reason to conform to German monetary conventions. The thaler was dropped after 1868 and in 1892 the corona was adopted.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 25.99 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 2243.1, Dav-17.
