Künker Auction 439, lot 2306

This specimen was lot 2306 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$35,768 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Joseph II., 1765-1790. Dukat 1770 C, Prag. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz und umgelegtem Mantel, darunter Münzstättensignatur C//Gekrönter Doppeladler mit gekröntem, mehrfeldigen Wappenschild auf der Brust, in den Fängen Schwert und Zepter. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Nur wenige Exemplare bekannt. Fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-80, ducat of 1770, Prague mint. obverse: laureate, armored and mantled bust right, engraver's initials below; reverse: double headed eagle supports crowned manifold arms, with sword and scepter in its claws. Extremely rare, only a few examples known, about extremely fine.)"

Altho this type of 1768-80 was struck in Prague, making it a Bohemian coin, it was also made in Vienna (A), Kremnitz (B), Karlsburg (E), Hall (F) and Nagybanya (G), as it was a standard type throughout the Hapsburg empire. We therefore list it under Austria. This example realized 37 times the catalog value.
