Sincona sale 100, lot 1091

This specimen was lot 1091 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 20,000 CHF (about US$30,144 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Leopold I. 1657-1705. 10 Dukaten 1682, Graz. Münzmeister Johann Anton Novak. LEOPOLDVS.D:G:ROM:IM:SE:AV:GE:HVN:BOH:REX Belorbeertes und geharnischtes Brustbild mit Spitzkragen nach rechts. Rv. ARCHI.AVS.DVX. - BVRG.STYRI(AE).(TE) Gekröntes Wappen in einer Kartusche mit Goldenem Vlies, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön. Mit Henkel und eingepunzter Wertzahl. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, ten ducats of 1682, Graz mint. Obverse: laureate and armored bust in embroidered collar right; reverse: crowned arms in a cartouche with order chain around, date above. Of the highest rarity, good Very Fine, with soldered loop and denomination punched in.)"

The SCWC notes this denomination was struck using single thaler and double thaler dies. The difference is subtle but the "IAN" (for Johann Anton Nowak, mintmaster in Graz 1670-1692) is directly below the shield on the single thaler and divided into "IA" and "N" on the double thaler. Also the single thaler has ribbons coming from below the crown which aren't present on the double thaler. This gold piece was struck using single thaler dies. Numista mentions 1672, 1674, 1676, 1678, 1684, 1687 and 1688.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 34.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 33.86 g.
