Austria 1657 thaler Dav-A3184
The first specimen was lot 1496 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,325 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Ferdinand III. 1625-1637-1657. Reichstaler 1657, Wien. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich +. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, thaler of 1657, Vienna mint. Very attractive with toning, choice extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 22340 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, 1657. Vienna Mint. Ferdinand III. NGC AU-55. A well struck and fully detailed Taler with even, gray toning throughout. From the Habsburg Collection." This type is listed for 1657 only yet is not rare. It bears the privy mark of mintmaster Johann Conrad Richthausen. Many similar types were minted in the 1650's, such as Dav-3183.
