Austria 1567 10 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4678 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €280 (about US$385 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. 10 Kreuzer 1567, Mühlau. R Feine Patina, leichte Auflagen, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. Erworben 1956 von der Bank Leu AG, Zürich. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95,ten kreuzer of 1567, Mühlau mint. Rare, fine patina, light verdigris, extremely fine.)"
At this time, the ten kreuzer was 5/36 of a thaler. Altho Hall in Tyrol claims to be the site of the first mechanized mint, that honor seems to belong to Mühlau, now a suburb of Innsbruck, where an experimental mint was set up in 1566. It operated only briefly before being moved to Hall. This type was struck in Mühlau 1566-67 and in Hall 1571-72.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.63 g, silver, 27 mm diameter, this specimen 4,03 g.
