Australia 2002 100 dollars KM-587
This specimen was lot 23188 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. 100 Dollars, 2002. Lunar Series, Year of the Horse. NGC MS-70. A technically flawless and attractive Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." The year of the horse was also honored on the following:
- silver half oz coin (KM 579, face value 50 cents),
- silver one oz coin (KM 580, face value one dollar),
- silver 2 oz coin (KM 581, face value two dollars),
- silver 10 oz coin (KM 583, face value ten dollars),
- silver 1 kg coin (KM 586, face value 30 dollars),
- gold 1/20 oz coin (KM 582, face value 5 dollars),
- gold 1/10 oz coin (KM 583, face value 15 dollars),
- gold ¼ oz coin (KM 584, face value 25 dollars),
- gold 2 oz coin (KM 707 and 1336, face value 200 dollars),
- gold 10 oz coin (KM 708 and 1337, face value 1000 dollars),
- gold 1 kg coin (KM 709 and 1338, face value 3000 dollars).
We suspect that a ½ oz gold coin was also issued but we don't see it listed. The year of the horse recurred in 2014 and a whole new suite of collectibles were produced and marketed by the Perth mint.
Recorded mintage: unknown plus 1,471 proofs.
Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine gold, 32.1 mm diameter, 1.00 troy oz AGW.
