Argentina 2013 peso
This specimen was lot 71338 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $40. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARGENTINA. Peso, 2013. Buenos Aires Mint. NGC MS-67. A modern superb-Gem commemorating the Bicentennial of Argentina. A pretty piece." This specimen features the sunface design originally used on the patriot eight reales of 1815-35. This issue should not be confused with the peso of the 1960's. The coinage was reformed in 1970, 1983, 1985 and 1992. Argentina was to suffer from bouts of hyperinflation for the next forty years, impoverishing a once prosperous region. This type is listed for 2013 only but closely related designs were struck starting in 1994. It celebrates not the bicentennial of independence, which was proclaimed in 1810, but the bicentennial of the first Argentine coin.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.35 g, brass center, copper-nickel outer ring, 23 mm diameter.
