Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 40509

This specimen was lot 40509 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARGENTINA. Nickel 50 Centimes Pattern, 1940. PCGS SPECIMEN-64. From the Augustana Collection." This is one of several fifty centavos patterns struck in 1940. This one features a head of Liberty by French engraver Lucien Bazor. In the end, the familiar Oudiné head was adopted for KM 39 of 1941. World War Two sent nickel prices through the roof and production of the nickel fifty centavos did not resume until 1957.
