Argentina 1828-RA P 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 73379 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARGENTINA. 8 Escudos, 1828-RA P. La Rioja Mint. PCGS VF-25. Attractive and appealing in a near-singular golden hue across its surfaces, with the slightest touch of topaz deposits in the recesses of the legends. Smooth handling and wear is distributed evenly across the devices, the delineated designs of which are particularly well-preserved. Sharply struck, with just a hint of strike weakness in the peripheral inscriptions." This type was struck 1826-35 but despite the eight years of mintage, it remains rare. The early years of independence were torn by struggles between the centralists in Buenos Aires and regionalists in La Rioja, Cordoba, Salta and elsewhere who even issued their own coinage.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27 g, 0.75 fine gold, AGW: 0.7596 oz.
