Künker Auction 422, lot 3403

This specimen was lot 3403 in Künker Auction 422 (Osnabrück, March 2025), where it sold for €4,800 (about US$5,619 including buyer's fees). The catalog description noted,

"ANHALT, ANHALT-BERNBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 HERZOGTUM Victor Friedrich, 1721-1765. Taler 1746, Hazgerode. Von größter Seltenheit. Justiert, winz. Randfehler, sehr schön. Exemplar der Sammlung Dr. Kurt Sonnenberg. Exemplar der Auktion Otto Helbing Nachf. Februar 1925, München, Nr. 64, der Auktion Leipziger Münzhandlung 92, Leipzig 2019, Nr. 1592 und der Auktion WAG Online 116, Februar 2021, Nr. 222. Erworben im Januar 2024 bei der Münzenhandlung Holger Siee. Die Taler dieses Typs wurden nach dem 1738 zum Reichsmünzfuß erhobenen Leipziger Münzfuß geprägt. Bei dem vorliegenden Stück handelt es sich wohl um das einzige im Handel befindliche Exemplar. (Anhalt, Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg (Duchy since 1806). Thalers of this type were struck according to the Leipzig Standard, which was elevated to the status of Imperial Coinage Standard in 1738.   • Obverse inscription unabridged: VICTor FRIDericus Dei Gratia Princeps ANHaltinus DUX Saxoniae Angariae & Westphaliae Comes ASCaniae Dominus Bernburgi & Servestae / 1746 / Heinrich Christian & Rudolf Friese / NACH DEN LEIPZiger FVSs
  • Obverse inscription translated: Victor Friederich, by the Grace of God, Prince of Anhalt, Duke of Saxony, Engern, & Westphalia, Count of Aschersleben, Lord of Bernburg & Zerbst / 1746 / Heinrich Christian & Rudolf Friese / According to The Leipzig Standard.

Reverse:

  • Reverse description: Crowned bear walking left on castle wall with door.
