This specimen was lot 70225 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. 5 Centavos, 1923. Lisbon Mint. NGC MS-64 Brown. On the cusp of Gem status, this delightful copper issue presents mostly brown surfaces with devices that are further accentuated by some shimmering hints of red." This type was struck 1921-23 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. It was accompanied by a copper-nickel ten centavos (KM 63), twenty centavos (KM 64) and fifty centavos (KM 65). After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.
