This type was struck 1921-23 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. It was accompanied by a bronze five centavos (KM 62), copper-nickel twenty centavos (KM 64) and fifty centavos (KM 65). After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.
