This type was struck 1921-24 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. It was accompanied by a bronze one and two centavos (KM 60 and 61) and copper-nickel ten and twenty centavos (KM 70 and 64). After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.
