Künker Auction 441, lot 4749
Ensisheim in upper Alsace. The political situation is of 1477, on the collapse of the Burgundians. Upper Alsace would be ruled by the Hapsburgs until 1648 when it passed to France.

This specimen was lot 4749 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$6,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Leopold V., 1619-1632. Doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (1627-1630), Ensisheim. RR Hübsche Patina, min. justiert, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. Erworben 1952 von Hermann Lanz, Graz. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Leopold V, 1619-32, undated double thaler, Ensisheim mint, circa 1627-30. Very rare, handsome patina, minor adjustment marks, extremely fine.)"

Leopold V (1586-1632) was made bishop of Strasbourg in 1598, at the age of 12, and held that office until 1626, when he resigned to get married. He obtained the governorship of Tyrol on the death of his cousin Maximilian in 1619. His sons Ferdinand Charles (d. 1662) and Sigismund Francis (d. 1665) also became counts of Tyrol and were the last archdukes to emit coinage. This undated type is rare and was accompanied by a similar half thaler and quarter thaler. Ensisheim would fall to the French at the end of the Thirty Years War.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
