Steve Album sale 54, lot 2079

This specimen was lot 2079 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "DURRANI: Fath Jang, 1842, AR rupee, Kabul, AH1258, full date atop the obverse, VF, Scarce." Fath Jang, son of the late unlamented Shah Shujah, held the throne of Afghanistan for six months in 1842, and had time to strike rupees in Kabul (shown here) and Ahmadshahi (Qandahar). He abdicated and left Kabul with the retreating British and lived the rest of his days in the Punjab. Dost Mohammad Khan of the Barakzais took the vacant throne and ruled until 1863.
