Steve Album sale 54, lot 2080

This specimen was lot 2080 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $95. The catalog description[1] noted, "ALIKOZAY: Sa'id Muhammad Khan, 1851-1855, AR qiran, Herat, AH1269, fixed date AH127[0] on obverse, VF-XF, ex SARC Auction 15 Lot 747." This type was struck AH 1269-1270. A qiran was half a rupee. Wikipedia comments, "Alakozai (Pashto: الکوزی - meaning descendant of Alako in Pashto) is a Pashtun tribe in Afghanistan. They are one of the four wealthiest tribes of the Zirak tribal confederacy of Durrani Pashtuns." Sa'id Muhammad Khan was Dost Mohammad's brother and ruled Peshawar until its conquest by the Sikhs in 1834. We don't know his status in Herat in AH 1269; he was likely governor for his brother.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.66 g, silver, this specimen 4.54 g.

Catalog reference: A-3156, KM-A406.
