Afghanistan AH 1240 1/2 rupee KM-A396
This specimen was lot 2086 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "DURRANI: Mahmud Shah, at Herat, 1801-1829, AR 1/2 rupee, Herat, AH1240, fine silver as the 2nd standard issue (about 5.10 g for the half rupee) but the weight of the 1st standard; the mint epithet dar al-saltanat is omitted; unpublished, VF, RRR." The Durranis or Saddozais established themselves in Afghanistan in the 1750's but had lost large chunks of their empire during the reign of Shah Zaman. Wikipedia comments,
"Mahmud Shah Durrani (Pashto/Dari: محمود شاہ درانی) ; 1769 – April 18, 1829) was born Prince and later ruler of the Durrani Empire (Afghanistan) between 1801 and 1803, and again between 1809 and 1818. From 1818 to 1829 he was the ruler of Herat. An ethnic Sadduzai tribe section of the Popalzai sub clan of the Durrani Pashtuns, he was the son of Timur Shah Durrani and grandson of Ahmad Shah Durrani."
Few half rupees are listed for Afghanistan. This one appears to be KM A396 (reverse with small circle) rather than KM 396 (large circle).
