Aargau 1807 batzen
This specimen was lot 3009 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,3781,378 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Aargau | Kanton, Batzen 1807, Aarau. Variante mit spitzem Wappen. Äusserst seltene Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (canton of Aargau, batzen of 1807, Aarau mint, variety with pointed shield. Extremely rare condition, About uncirculated.)"
Aargau, a small canton on the Rhine between Zurich and Basel, struck coins until 1831. This type was struck 1807-16. The 1807 comes in fine style (KM 9.1, shown here) or crude style (KM 9.2). The monetary system was 4 pfennig = one kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = one batzen, 10 batzen = one franken.
Recorded mintage: 132,000 (both styles).
