Künker Auction 439, lot 2003

This specimen was lot 2003 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,942 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ANDORRA, Fürstentum. 50 Diners in Gold 1963. Bischof Benlloch von Urgel. Medaillenprägung. Mit Riffelrand. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Laut K./M. nur 8 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. Das vorliegende Exemplar wurde von Hans M. F. Schulman (New York), mit der Genehmigung der Regierung von Andorra, vertrieben. (principality of Andorra, fifty diners of 1963, bishop Benlloch von Urgel, struck in gold, with reeded edge. Extremely rare, only 8 examples struck per the SCWC. Proof. This specific example was distributed by Hans M. F. Schulman (New York) with the authorization of the Government of Andorra.)"

Andorra, a protectorate of France and Spain, isn't really supposed to issue coins but occasionally markets NCLT's anyway. Numista states this was struck in Munich. Juan Bautista Benlloch i Vivó (Valencia, December 29, 1864 – Madrid, February 14, 1926) was a Spanish archbishop and cardinal. He held the positions of Apostolic Administrator of Solsona (1901–1906), Bishop of Urgell and Co-Prince of Andorra (1906–1919), and Archbishop of Burgos (1919–1926).

Recorded mintage: 3,350 in silver plus 8 in gold plus more in platinum.

Specification: KM X8: 28 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter; KM X8a: gold; KM X8b: platinum, reeded edge. This specimen gold, 38,35 mm diameter; 34,68 g (31,22 g fine gold).

Catalog reference: KM X8, KM X8a, KM X8b.
