This Spanish 500 pesetas was issued for circulation in 1993-2001. Cayón lists this type but not the 2001. The coin became obsolete on the adoption of the euro in 2002. The circle on the reverse above the "500" contains a latent image of the mintmark, best seen on the bottom image. Latent images on coins have been adopted by several countries as counterfeiting deterrents but the continuing decline in the number of coins circulating worldwide likely spells doom for this technology.

Specification: 12 g, aluminum bronze, 28 mm diameter, reeded edge, engraved by Manuel Martinez Tornero and Luis José Díaz Salas.
