This specimen was lot 12100 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $511. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Baden. 5 Mark, 1877. NGC AU-55." This type was struck 1877 only and is rather scarce. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces.
Recorded mintage: 345,000.
Specification: 1.99 g, 0.900 fine gold, .067 troy oz AGW.
