This specimen was lot 20978 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Prussia. Friedrich II gold Friedrichs d'Or 1770A, MS61 NGC, extremely sharp details with abundant original mint luster on both sides. Rare type and a most attractive example." Gold coins of eighteenth century Prussia are scarce as, despite Frederick the Great's strenuous efforts to build up the local economy, Prussia remained a poor and backward country. This type was struck in Berlin (shown here) and Breslau (Fr-2407) 1764-75. It traded for five thalers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.68 g, 0.903 fine gold, .194 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 309, Friedberg 2406.
