Aureo sale 243, lot 680

This specimen was lot 680 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 470 € (about $710 including buyer's fees).

The catalog[2] noted,

"1804. Carlos IV. Santiago. FJ/JJ. 1 real. Parte de brillo original. Bella. Muy rara así. EBC/EBC+. (One real of 1804, Santiago mint, FJ/JJ overassayer. Some luster, nice, very rare thus, extremely fine.)"

This specimen is one of a series struck 1792-1808 in Santiago, Chile, during the reign of Charles IV. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages and this type is not rare.

The variety shown is mentioned in the SCWC but awarded no premium.

Recorded mintage: 35,000.

Specification: 3.38 g, .896 fine silver, .098 troy oz ASW.
