Austria H3081-32094r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32094 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Franz Joseph I gold Proof 100 Corona 1911 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS, Vienna mint. A significant rarity as a Proof, this dazzling near-gem possesses seemingly flawless mirror fields, its devices coated in matte frost. Only close inspection with a loupe reveals the hairlines which have prevented this piece from attaining an even more exalted grade. Rarely offered in any grade and certainly amongst the finest extant. Ex. Kokolus Collection." This gold coin is among the last issued before Austria's suicidal plunge into World War One. The portrait is of Francis Joseph, emperor of Austria 1848-1916. The Austro-Hungarian empire did not long survive him. Regular 100 coronas were emitted 1909-15, with the 1915 being restruck in large numbers in recent times.

Recorded mintage: 11,165.

Specification: 33.87 g, 0.900 fine gold, .980 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter.
