Hungary 1638-NB thaler Dav-3201
This specimen was lot 3225 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Ferdinand III. 1637-1657. Taler 1638 NB, Nagybanya. Selten. Sehr schön. Feine Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, thaler of 1638, Nagybánya mint. Rare, Very Fine, Nicely toned.)"
A rare variety exists (KM 113.1/Dav-3202) with the emperor wearing a lace collar instead of a ruffed collar, as here. This type is noted for 1638 only and is very scarce. In 1638, Hungary was contested between the Austrians, the Turks and the prince of Transylvania.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 27.90 g.
