Mexico 2009Mat 5 pesos rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is one of a series issued by the Mexico City mint to honor heroes of the War of Independence (1810-21) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-17). The program was modeled on the U. S. Mint's state quarter program and has been quite popular. The specimen shown here honors Filomeno Mata (1881-1911), journalist and martyr of the Revolution. The coins are the same weight and diameter as the bimetallic five pesos issued since 1992 (KM 552).

Recorded mintage: 9,935,689 plus 4,920 proofs.

Specification: 7.07 g, bimetallic, stainless steel outer ring with an aluminum-bronze center, 25.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 907.
