Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1442

This specimen was lot 1442 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,127 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV double louis d'or au bandeau, 1755L, Bayonne. D/ T. à g., ceinte d'un bandeau. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare Traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold double louis of the ribbon of 1755, Bayonne mint. Obverse: head left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre below a crown. Rare, adjustment marks, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1742-74 with a face value of 48 livres. Only a few dates, such as 1756-61 from Strasbourg, can be called common.

Recorded mintage: 15,079[2], but an available date.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-29 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers, this specimen is 16,17 g.
