France 1742-X louis d'or

Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52013

This specimen was lot 52013 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1742-X. Amiens Mint. Louis XV. NGC MS-63. This beautiful Choice Mint State exemplar delivers a sharp and beautiful luster, with glimmering eye appeal and much allure, with limited signs of actual handling throughout." The louis d'or au bandeau was struck 1740-74 and is the commonest gold coin of Louis XV after the louis d'or aux lunettes of 1726-40. This product of the Amiens mint is noted as common.

Recorded mintage: 62,220, a common date^[2].

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
